Research Synopsis
The research topic for my PhD in broader scope was to analyze interactions of biomolecules with engineered surfaces. I observed cell-surface interactions where the surfaces were coated with various DNA/RNA molecules. The aim was to see whether such interactions can be enhanced, optimized or subdued by tuning the resonance between cell membrane molecules and the surface grafted DNA/RNA or antibodies. Cell images were captured real time and behavior was analyzed using codes build in Matlab® and other platforms. Physical properties of the surfaces (material, texture etc) was also tuned to observe any changes in the cell behavior. To explain the interactions in molecular level, I started working on using NAMD®, a widely used molecular dynamics platform, highly suited for biophysical simulations. This tool creates a new frontier for a hardwired electrical engineer like me to understand, observe and explain the underlying phenomenon.
